Assistants:

Hours of instruction:

Weekly: four hours of lectures + two hours of exercises (4+2+0)

Goals:

Studying the basics of inorganic chemistry, understanding the patterns in physical and chemical properties of elements and their compounds based on the structure and position of the elements in the Periodic Table. The goal of the practical classes is to teach students to apply the theoretical patterns and use them to solve various problems, including numerical problems.

Outcome:

After successfully passing the exam, students will be able to:

  • predict the properties of elements based on their electronic structure, i.e. their position in the Periodic Table;
  • name the basic types of compounds which elements of different groups of the Periodic Table form and explain their structure and properties;
  • explain the basic differences in physical and chemical properties of the first element in a group compared with the rest of the elements in the group;
  • name and explain the methods for obtaining the s-, p- and d- block elements and their compounds;
  • name and explain the types of bonds and intermolecular interactions in basic classes of inorganic compounds;
  • explain the structure of complex compounds based on ligand field theory;
  • use the names of compounds in accordance with inorganic nomenclature;
  • solve numerical problems and problems from the areas which were covered in lectures.

Teaching methods:

Lectures, experimental demonstrations in the lectures and practical classes.
