Hours of instruction:

Weekly: four hours of lectures + six hours of labwork (4+0+6)

Goals:

Objectives: The aim of this course is to provide the students with the knowledge of actual topics in Inorganic Chemistry. This comprises study of a variety of chemical elements, their compounds, particularly those enabling the insight in biological systems and practical application in different fields of science and technique.

Outcome:

Outcome: During this course students will amplify their knowledge in the field of Inorganic Chemistry and learn how to recognize and utilize the information from the literature of particular significance in Inorganic Chemistry.

Teaching methods:

Lectures, laboratory exercises, semester papers.

Extracurricular activities:

Coursebooks:

Main coursebooks:

  • K. Mackay, R. Mackay, W. Henderson: Introduction to Modern Inorganic Chemistry, N. Thornes, 2002.

Supplementary coursebooks:

  • Recent papers from international scientific journals.

Additional material:

  Course activities and grading method

Lectures:

0 points (4 hours a week)

Syllabus:

General properties of elements (s, p, d, f) in correlation with PSE; d-Block elements of PSE - general properties, their role in science, technology and life; 3d elements and their compounds-particular aspects; 4d and 5d elements and their compounds-particular aspects; f elements-specificity and characteristic compounds. Carbonyl compounds of d and f elements. Organometallic compounds of lanthanides and actinides and their role in catalysis. Cluster compounds of p- and d-block elements. Selected inorganic materials; solid state, aqueous and non-aqueous solutions; instrumental methods for the structure determination in the solid state; inorganic biomaterials, and the role of inorganic compounds in environmental chemistry.

Labwork:

20 points (6 hours a week)

Syllabus:

During laboratory exercises, which are organized individually, the students will synthesize and characterize specific inorganic compounds. The synthesis comprises different synthetic routes (e. g. reaction of transmetallation, template or direct synthesis). Different methods for the characterization of compounds will be applied depending on the nature of compounds.

Semester papers:

20 points

Oral exam:

60 points
