Hours of instruction:

Weekly: two hours of lectures + two hours of labwork (2+0+2)

Goals:

To introduce students to the traditional and modern methods in the field of chemistry of heterocycles.

Outcome:

Understanding the structure, properties and reactivity of some classes of heterocyclic compounds. Ability to conduct research in the field of synthesis of heterocyclic compounds which are needed in medicinal chemistry and chemistry of natural products.

  3. Saturated heterocyclic compounds.
  4. Pyrrole.
  5. Furan.
  6. Thiophene.
  7. Indole.
  8. Benzo[b]furan.
  9. Benzo[b]thiophene.
  10. Pyridine.
  11. Quinoline.
  12. Methodological approach in the synthesis of natural products and biologically active heterocyclic compounds.

Labwork:

30 points (2 hours a week)

Syllabus:

Experimental exercises include the realization of five preparations which represent an experimental illustration of the subject matter covered within the lectures. The preparations include the synthesis and transformation of certain classes of heterocyclic compounds which have been described in the literature. Apart from that, within experimental exercises students learn about the basic techniques for isolation and purification of synthesized compounds.
